What makes the Hague so special?
In our experience at Hydroworks, very few water softeners perform consistently well in hard water, and so we are very proud to have the Hague within our range as it continues to be one of those that work flawlessly.
We like the Hague range of products because they are energy-efficient, water-saving, highly salt efficient and their products are corrosion-resistant too!
Hague products are a long-standing range of USA softeners manufactured in Ohio, by William Hague. Their products are backed by 9 U.S. patents with additional patents pending to deliver unmatched quality in the worldwide water treatment industry.
We are confident that you will enjoy the benefits throughout your home as soft water keeps your home and family looking and feeling their best.
At Hydroworks, to the frustration of some would-be suppliers, I am notoriously slow to embrace a new product into our range as I really want to ensure that it is a product we can trust and rely on to meet our 4-point Litmus test promise we make to every customer:
Our Hydroworks 4-point Litmus Test
- A Product must be RELIABLE
- A Product must be EFFICIENT
- A Product must give CONSISTENTLY HIGH-QUALITY WATER
- The supplier must provide EXCELLENT TECHNICAL BACKUP
We are proud to welcome the Hague into the Hydroworks range and invite you to meet the Hague family in the video opposite and find out what makes their products so special.
The Hague Solution
The founder of Hague Water Quality International, William Hague, initially set out to tackle four of the biggest problems homeowners face in the USA, namely:-
- Water Hardness
- Taste and Odour
- Cloudiness & Discolouration
- Sanitary Mineral Staining
However, increasingly within the UK, we are meeting customers with the same water quality concerns, and the Hague range therefore offers a ready-made solution that is affordable and durable which is customisable for the needs of the homeowner.
Regardless of whether your water comes straight from the mains, or you have a private supply from a borehole, well or river, this one range of products can tackle all your needs seamlessly.
The Hague Difference
Energy-efficient, water-saving, and corrosion-resistant for fresh, beautifully soft water, every time.

Regardless of whether your Hague Softener is a complete single tank system, or comes in two separate cabinets, the system works the same.
In the following video, you can see how the Hague works, and you will be easily able to tell what makes it so different to other electric softeners in the UK market.
All Hague softeners are non-servicing, which means they don’t need expensive regular maintenance, making them a firm favourite amongst Hydroworks customers.
Best of all, Hague softeners regenerate quietly and quickly.
Edge to Edge design
The Hague is not a conventional water treatment product, and its patented design has a complete screen at both the top and the bottom of the cylinder, engineered to distribute water evenly, preventing channelling, which can result in reduced water quality.
At Hydroworks, we fondly refer to this as ‘Edge-to-Edge’ filtration because the whole of the resin bed is evenly drenched, from one edge of the cylinder to the other edge.
We know that this ‘Edge-to-Edge’ screen design performs well within the UK because Harvey Softeners purchased the design patent in the early 1990s for its own softeners from Hague, for use within the European market.
The benefit of this ‘Edge-to-Edge’ design is that the water quality remains consistently high, so softened water feels softer for longer with a Hague softener than it might with any other type of conventional water softener.
Only Hague and Harvey Softeners have this patented feature.
Hard water in the Hague starts by entering a chamber on the top of the cylinder, then drenches the filtration media.
The top screen itself is also unique in that it has a built-in, patented, self-cleaning filter that offers sediment filtration to the whole home.
The range extends to include the ability to also add in additional media, such as carbon for taste and odour, and a selection of other media (listed further below) to help tackle most water quality concerns.
The regeneration of Hague softeners takes up to 80% less time, using up to 50% less salt and up to 80% less water than conventional softeners, making them one of the most efficient systems in the market.
The Hague Systems feature a built-in, self-cleaning whole-house sediment filter that saves time, money and labour costs, also reducing replacement filter costs.
Conventional Systems
Channelling of the filtration media means that the water starts off great, but reduces in quality as much of the water distribution goes through the same part of the media. Over time, the water increasingly comes out the other side with unsatisfactory levels of unwanted minerals remaining.
The Hague Systems
The Hague works by distributing the flow of water evenly through the cylinder and media via these directional flow screens. The water drenches the resin bed, creating a consistently high quality of softened water.
Tailor-made filtration
Once we know what your water requirements are, we can tailor-make your softener to treat those concerns.
Depending on the level of concern will depend on whether we can meet than need within the standard-sized Hague softener, or if we need to increase the size of the softener to add in additional filtration media.
This unique patented feature means that your Hague can become a ‘one-stop’ point of treatment powerhouse for your home.
To the right is what a standard water softener might look like which gives us the ability to either just soften the water or add in basic additional filtration media onto the top filter screen, and to the far-right of that is a more powerful system that enables a greater quantity of media to be added.
Below are listed just some of the filtration medias that are available for the Hague systems:
-
Chlorostat (KDF55)
Using a 1:1 combination of high-purity copper-zinc granules and the redox principal, our chlorostat media works to effectively reduce chlorine (chlorostat-KDF55), heavy metals and control micro-organisms from mains water supplies.
-
Nitrate Select Resin
Most commonly found in well water due to septic tank leakage and fertilisers, our nitrate select resin uses sodium chloride to regenerate the anion resin. The anion resin reduces nitrates from your supply.
-
Tannin Resin
A strong-base, anion-exchange resin, is engineered to ensure excellent reduction of organic matter (tannins).
-
PC Carbon
Media is made from select grades of coconut shells. Reduces/removes taste and odours and most man-made pollutants from water, including chlorine.
-
Calcite
Crushed and screened white marble media which can neutralise acidic or low pH water. As the calcite neutralises the water, it will dissolve and increase the hardness of the water, effectively balancing your water to cease damage on sinks, hot water tanks, taps, and more.
-
Birm
Used for the reduction of dissolved iron and manganese from water supplies. The dissolved oxygen content must equal at least 15% of the iron content with a pH of 6.8 or more.
-
Ultra-Fil
Engineered from garnet, this high-density granular filter media targets sediment with ease filtering down to 20 microns.
-
Sulfurstat (KDF85)
No more cleaning up stains on sinks and drains. 85% copper and 15% zinc, our high-purity copper-zinc granules effectively reduce ferrous iron, hydrogen sulfide, and heavy metals.
-
Fine Mesh Resin & Bacteriastat
Removes calcium and magnesium (hardness) from water. The use of fine mesh resin allows for higher operating capacities, faster kinetics, more effective iron removal, and less rinse water required during regeneration compared to standard mesh resins. * Bacteriastat (2 lb) - inhibits bacteria growth in the resin bed.
-
GreensandPlus
This pre-filter is placed in front of your softener to pre-treat your water. Using our manganese-dioxide surface of GreensandPlus, our black filter media acts as a catalyst for removing soluble iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide from water. Use potassium permanganate to regenerate the media bed.
Fine Mesh Resin
Very often a customer will say to us that they can buy a water softener cheaper online or in a plumber’s merchant, which is, of course, true.
From time to time, we get approached by importers wanting us to sell their softeners, and one of the key factors we look at is the resin quality.
In many cases, these cheaper machines cost a third of what just the resin alone costs on a premier machine.
The Hague uses a premium grade of fine mesh resin which has an average bead size that is 23% smaller than standard mesh resin.
With smaller beads, the ion exchange process happens more quickly. The result is less salt, less water, and less time is needed versus standard mesh for the same capacity.
Fine mesh resin works best with a packed bed. This means no
wasted free board space. Hague softeners can be smaller but at the
same time more powerful.
Another all-too-often overlooked factor about the resin is its ability to withstand chlorine attack, the most common cause of water softener failure. The Hague softeners use a very chlorine tolerant resin to help prevent chlorine degradation.
Touch Screen Controller
The larger Powerhouse models have the additional feature of adding the Touch Screen Controller for added benefit, including salt monitoring.
Featuring a full-colour 3.25” touch screen, this controller also has the ability to set a “Do Not Disturb” mode for quiet times.
It also includes:
- Power Loss Protection
- Absolute Brining
- Capacity Guard
- Calculates the Hardness
And has low voltage requirements.
